One of the main problems with our speculative economy seems to be that gambling makes people impervious to reality. How else to explain that a company like Rayonier can let its Performance Fiber Division stink up one of the most significant free-flowing rivers in the U.S., the giant Altamaha in Georgia, without anyone in the boardrooms noticing?
Maybe it's because the boardrooms are in Florida that the pollution of the delta seventy miles up the road is of no account. The Altamaha Riverkeeper having filed suit to insist that the Clean Water Act be enforced seems not to have registered enough to prompt a change, either. Perhaps a little bad publicity is in order.
